GARY IS FIGHTING TO REFORM CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM

After the murder of George Floyd, Gary has been outspoken on addressing racial inequalities and reforming our criminal justice system:

  • “My heart breaks for George Floyd, for his loved ones and for all who are hurt by this senseless and indefensible death. The pain and heartbreak in Minneapolis and across the nation are a reminder of the work we must do so America can achieve her promise of equality.”
  • Gary has been working and having conversations with community and faith leaders across Michigan and has directed people to donate to Detroit NAACP to support their work in the fight for equality.
  • Gary reintroduced a bill to create a National Criminal Justice Commission to assess the criminal justice system. His bipartisan bill passed the Senate in 2018.

WNEM: Peters introduces bill to create commission to overhaul criminal justice system

  • There is unprecedented bipartisan support in Congress for a bill aimed at studying and revamping the country’s entire criminal justice system.
  • Peters is sponsoring legislation that would create a 14-member bipartisan National Criminal Justice Commission to assess the entire system top to bottom.
  • The commission’s goal would be to propose reforms, address the most pressing issues including inequality, overburdened courts, skyrocketing incarceration costs, and relationships between law enforcement officers and the communities they serve.
  • “It’s why I once again have strong bipartisan support. I have 20 co-sponsors, roughly half republicans, half democrats. I also have organizations, police organizations all across the country that have endorsed this legislation as well as civil rights and civil liberties groups,” Peters said.
