LANSING — Today, Democrats in the Michigan House voted to expand the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act to protect against discrimination due to sexual orientation and gender identity. Michigan Democratic Party Chair Lavora Barnes released the following statement in response:
“Today is a huge milestone for all supporters of justice and equality. For far too long, the LGBTQ+ community has been targeted in the workplace, in housing, and in our community at large. The Elliott-Larsen Act now protects the LGBTQ+ community in a meaningful way from discriminatory practices, and I am proud Michigan Democrats have led this historic charge.
“Once again, Republicans fail to support equal justice under the law. Discriminatory practices against any group should not be tolerated, and Republican lawmakers must be held accountable for not supporting the LGBTQ+ community against acts of discrimination and injustice.”
