GOP primary has seen more than $37 million in spending
LANSING — Republican gubernatorial candidates John James, Perry Johnson, and Mike Cox are set to square off on Wednesday and Thursday nights—the first time the Republican candidates have shared a stage after James has dodged primary debates for more than 14 months.
The two debates—hosted by FOX 2 in Detroit and WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids—come as the Republican primary for governor has become increasingly filled with negative and personal attacks among the candidates.
As they’ve battled it out, each of these candidates has lined up in support of Trump’s cost-raising and healthcare-cutting agenda, and their support for his failed policies will be on full display. James has voted in support of Trump’s cost-raising policies, Johnson has compared himself to Trump, and Cox has bragged about his time as Trump’s lawyer.
Ahead of the debates, Michigan Democratic Party spokesperson Derrick Honeyman released the following statement:
“This primary has dragged on for more than a year and has been wracked by unprecedented infighting, groveling to Donald Trump, and an exorbitant level of spending to attack each other. As the race now reaches the debate stage, primary rivals John James, Perry Johnson, and Mike Cox have never been more at each other’s throats, with increasingly personal and bitter attacks coming from all sides.
“No matter who ultimately emerges from this MAGA primary, John James, Perry Johnson, and Mike Cox have made themselves inseparable from the corrupt and cost-raising president. Michigan Democrats look forward to defeating whichever one of these candidates ends up as the Republican nominee.”
