MAGA Debate Week: James, Cox, and Johnson Trade Barbs

LANSING — Knives are out in the MAGA primary for governor with John James, Mike Cox, and Perry Johnson hurling barbs back and forth in the lead-up to two televised primary debates on Wednesday and Thursday.

Here’s a glimpse of the recent infighting:

  • James’ campaign recently accused Johnson of being an “online catfish” and posted an AI-generated image of Johnson as a catfish. On Friday, James said that Johnson “thinks your vote can be bought” as James has been flooded with negative ads.
  • Johnson is running ads on the homepage of The Detroit News calling James a “lying liberal loser.”
  • Cox has scheduled a press conference this morning where he will “draw contrasts in race” and “highlight significant new developments.”

“The MAGA primary for governor has devolved into a three-way brawl between candidates too damaged to lead,” said Michigan Democratic Party spokesperson Derrick Honeyman. “While they focus on attacking each other, one thing is clear: every one of these Republicans is too extreme for Michigan, and none of them will stand up to Donald Trump as he jacks up costs and guts health care.”
