John James Still Silent as Trump-Backed Lawsuit Poses “New Threat” to Michiganders’ Health Care

James Refused to Speak Out Against Lawsuit Last Year

Called the Health Care Law a “Monstrosity” and Vowed to Repeal It As Senator, Supported Trump’s Agenda 2000%

LANSING — A new development in the GOP lawsuit against the Affordable Care Act poses an “unexpected threat” to protections for Michiganders with pre-existing conditions, and John James still won’t speak out against it. When the lawsuit to end health care protections for millions of Michiganders began last year, James refused to say anything. Now that the circuit court is questioning whether Democratic attorneys general and the House of Representatives have standing in the case, the threat has become even more pressing.

John James’s silence is the latest piece of evidence that he would be a reliable vote for Republican efforts in Washington to drive up health care costs and reduce access. James called the health care law a “monstrosity” and said he supported Trump’s agenda “2,000%” in now deleted campaign material from his last failed run:

“Our failure to repeal and replace Obamacare is the surest sign that we need new conservative leadership in Washington, someone who will go and work their tail off to remove this monstrosity…”

If the lawsuit is successful, it would threaten health coverage for millions of Michiganders, removing protections for people with pre-existing conditions and increasing health care costs. 1.6 million Michiganders under the age of 65 have a pre-existing condition, but James still promised to “work [his] tail off” to undermine their health care protections.

It shouldn’t surprise anyone that James won’t oppose this Trump-approved lawsuit, or that he supports Trump’s disastrous efforts on health care. James said he supported Trump’s agenda 2000%, regardless of the damage done to health coverage for Michigan families.

“John James’ long silence about this lawsuit shows he can’t be trusted to stand up for access to affordable health care for millions of Michiganders, including coverage protections for Michiganders who have a pre-existing condition,” said MDP Spokesperson Alex Japko. “James’ silent approval of this lawsuit and his loud support for Trump’s agenda makes it clear that he would work with Washington Republicans to gut coverage and increase premiums the second he got to the Senate.”
