The Michigan Democratic Party (MDP) is seeking a full-time Party Affairs Director responsible for ensuring Party business is conducted effectively, efficiently, and in accordance with Party rules and procedures.
This position will report to the Chair, and work with the entire Party team. Salary is commensurate with experience, with health care, vision and dental coverage, as well as a cell phone stipend and transportation benefits. This is a union position.
Responsibilities
This position serves as the primary point of contact for volunteer party leaders, is the lead planner for statewide Conventions (1-2 per year), State Central Committee meetings (4 per year), and performs administrative and political tasks necessary for the smooth functioning of the State Central Committee and local party organizations. This position will lead all State Party efforts for the implementation of the 2028 Delegate Selection Plan and Affirmative Action Plan, including leading efforts around the 2028 Presidential Convention.
- Preparing and conducting State Central Committee meetings, including working with the MDP Chair to plan meeting business, working with committee chairs to plan committee business, producing materials necessary for the meeting, and managing the MDP’s resolutions process.
- Leading efforts to plan and execute all MDP State Conventions, including project management of all details and work assigned to other MDP staff.
- Working with Project 83 to provide instruction and assistance to local party leaders on questions of Party rules, conflict management, and volunteer leadership.
- Ensuring that leadership lists are kept up to date, both online and the Party’s internal lists.
- Working with the MDP Party Membership manager to track and grow the MDP membership program, guaranteeing the growth and maintenance of the membership list, membership communication and engagement, and dissemination of membership lists to local party leaders.
- Managing the Presidential delegate selection process, including drafting all necessary rules and procedures, recruiting volunteers, ensuring local parties are complying with rules (and providing support as needed to ensure they are able to do so), and keeping all official records relating to the delegate selection process.
- Performing other related tasks as needed.
Requirements
- A Bachelor’s Degree is required. Candidates should have a minimum of 5 years of professional work experience and hold at least two years of related work experience, including previous work experience with the Democratic Party or a political campaign
- Be a committed Democrat and have demonstrated political beliefs that fit with the Democratic Party’s mission
- Possess a strong knowledge of the structure and workings of the Democratic Party in the state of Michigan and nationally
- Proficiency in Robert’s Rules and the RCWs that impact political parties and elections, or a commitment to learn within the first 90 days
- Have experience managing large scale projects
- Be resourceful and able to solve problems on one’s own
- Have strong management aptitude and demonstrated skill at setting and communicating priorities
- Be comfortable working with people from a wide range of diverse backgrounds
- Demonstrate strong writing skills and attention to detail
- Proficient with various Microsoft Office products, including Word and Excel, as well as database management
- Strong public speaking skills are preferred
- Skills in multiple languages given preference
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary: $62,000 – $72,000
- Benefits: Includes health insurance, paid time off, retirement contributions, and additional benefits.
