Yesterday, Democratic State Representatives held a press conference on the steps of the Capitol blasting Michigan Republicans for their decades-long effort to strip Americans of their reproductive rights and their continued efforts to ban and criminalize abortion in Michigan.
State Representatives Brenda Carter, Laurie Pohustky, and Christine Morse called out Republicans for their extreme, ultra-MAGA agenda, and emphasized how Democrats up and down the ballot will fight to keep abortion safe and legal in the Great Lakes State.
Here’s a look at what Michiganders are hearing from Michigan Democrats, who refuse to back down as Republicans attack reproductive freedoms:

“State governments have been and will continue to be the last line of defense against every one of those attacks,” Pohutsky said. “So yes, vote. But donate your time and money to pro-abortion candidates and causes. Without a Democratic majority in the Legislature, we will be forced to continue to play defense.”

“This November, we have an option: To vote for Governor Whitmer, who sides with 67 percent of Michigan voters, who believe Roe v. Wade should remain in place as the law of the land – or an extremist Republican who wants to ban abortion with no exceptions,” Carter said.

State Rep. Christine Morse (D-Texas Twp.), who had an abortion over a decade ago after learning it wouldn’t be safe for her to go through with the pregnancy, said this SCOTUS decision is going to be potentially deadly for many women in Michigan.

Pohutsky slammed a bill introduced by state Rep. Steve Carra (R-Three Rivers) last week that would update the state’s 1931 abortion ban to “make it enforceable post-Roe v. Wade.” Carra’s bill would make it a felony crime, punishable up to 20 years in prison, for providing medication abortions.
“We can not fall for the lie that Republicans are being moderate about this while they snatch bodily autonomy away from the people of this state,” Pohutsky said.

The lawmakers also spoke about how overturning Roe V Wade could impact November elections and believe maintaining a Democratic governor is the key to keeping abortion legal in Michigan.
“We must re-elect Gov. Whitmer. We must reelect attorney general Dana Nessel, We must keep Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and we must keep our democratic majority in Congress to prevent a federal abortion ban,” Carter said.
