  • The American people need transparency. They need to understand exactly what’s happening at the Postal Service. He [Louis DeJoy] has not been forthcoming. I’ve sent oversight letters asking what’s happening. Initially, he said, well, there are no national policy changes that are leading to a slowdown in mail delivery. He’s now said something differently. He contradicted this.
  • He needs to be much more transparent. I’m hearing from folks all across Michigan, in fact I’ve had thousands of people send me their stories of how mail is being delayed. We need to get to the bottom of this.
  • Every day it continues to pile up. That’s not what we expect of the U.S. Postal Service. That’s clearly not what they’ve done in the past. And we need to get back to those standards that existed prior to this new postmaster general.
  • The Postal U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that delivers to every single address in our country. Rural America depends on the postal service for medicines, for paychecks, for getting their bill so they can pay them on time and not have fees.

Daily Beast: What the F*** Is Happening With the Mail?

  • Sen. Gary Peters, Sr. (D-MI), who is leading the investigation into the United States Postal Service backlog, explains this postal shitshow to co-host Molly Jong-Fast and producer Jesse Cannon—and how Mitch McConnell is screwing over the American people from a comprehensive COVID relief package.
  • Then, there is the postal service situation. “There was a major spike in comments coming in” about post office delays, he explained. That’s when he kicked off his inquiry, which hasn’t been easy with a Postmaster General who is “not very forthcoming.”
  • “The more we looked into it the more we realized how widespread it was. We started talking to folks who are actually in the post office, let me say at the outset these are incredibly professional people, they believe in the mission they work hard, they do whatever they can to get the mail out as quickly as possible, it’s something that’s just part of who they are. And they started complaining saying we’re now in policies we’ve never seen before and it’s having the impact of slowing down the mail at a time when we’re in a pandemic and people are relying on mail now more than ever.”

WNEM:Peters Calls For Urgent Hearing On USPS Changes, Delivery Delays

  • U.S. Senator Gary Peters (D-MI) is calling for an urgent hearing on Friday, Aug. 21, or as soon as possible regarding the recent changes, Postmaster General Louis Dejoy has directed.
  • In a letter to Chairman Ron Johnson, Peters pressed for the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, which has oversight of the U.S. Postal Service, to swiftly convene a hearing and call DeJoy and Robert Duncan, Chairman of the Postal Service Board of Governors, to give sworn testimony about recent directives and their effects on postal customers across the country.
  • Peters recently launched an investigation into DeJoy’s operational changes and the slowdowns, delays, and backlogs they are triggering in communities across the country after USPS provided misleading statements about the causes of the delays.
  • Since launching his investigation, Peters said he has received nearly 7,000 complaints from people across the country who have seen significant and harmful mail delays under DeJoy’s tenure.

Fox 6: Postal Changes Are Delaying Mail-Order Medicine For Veterans, According To Lawmakers

  • Michigan Sen. Gary Peters, the top Democrat on the Senate Homeland Security Committee, has been investigating the postal delays after he said DeJoy failed to provide answers about why they were happening. Peters is asking a dozen veterans organizations to provide him with information about wait times for mail-order prescriptions or other problems. He says some veterans have reported to him financial harm caused by late fees after their bills and payments took much longer to arrive in July and August.
  • “Those who gave so much to serve this country should be able to count on the nation’s Postal Service to deliver their medications in a timely manner,” the lawmakers wrote Friday.
