In Case You Missed It: Gary Peters Continues Leading On Investigation Trump Administration’s Postal Service Delays

In case you missed it, U.S. Senator Gary Peters joined U.S. Representative Brenda Lawrence to discuss the impact of postal service delays on Michiganders and Americans across the country. Last week, Sen. Peters launched an investigation into recent mail delays to make sure Michiganders can count on reliable service from the USPS, including receiving social security checks, paychecks, and lifesaving prescription medicines.

  • “Over the last few weeks, delivery times have gotten longer and longer and it coincides with a new Postmaster General that was put in place by Donald Trump. His qualifications for the job was the fact that he’s a very big contributor to Donald Trump and he’s now put in procedures that I’m hearing from our Postal Service workers…they’re saying they have to do things that they’ve never done before and they’re seeing mail pile up.”

  • Peters spoke virtually Monday, Aug. 10, 2020 about a new investigation he was launching into the problems the new policies posed, including postal delays.
  • He said DeJoy altered the initial reasoning behind the changes, and Peters still wanted an explanation, “including what sort of information went into this policy; what sort of data was collected; and why did the postal services or the postmaster general think this would enhance service,” Peters said.

  • On a press call Monday morning, Senator Gary Peters explained that the USPS handles half to mail in the entire world and has never really had a problem keeping up with it. That is until lately and that has people pointing the finger at the administration.
  • “The Postal Service is a critical service and we need to fix it,” says Sen. Peters, “We need to fix it quickly.”
  • “We’re trying to find out exactly what were the policies put in place, over the last few weeks, by the new Postmaster General that appears to be slowing down the mail,” says Peters.

  • Senator Gary Peters (D-MI) is investigating delays in mail delivery. Peters is the ranking Democrat on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee – which oversees the United States Postal Service.
  • Peters says some recent changes in policy don’t make sense.“Reductions in overtime. Reductions in extra trips by transportation trucks to make sure that mail isn’t sitting in the post office. Processing machines that are being taken out. There are a whole host of things that are happening and we need to have answers,” he says.

  • US Democratic Sen. Gary Peters of Michigan and postal workers are accusing Postmaster General Louis DeJoy of forcing workers to leave their work unfinished in order to slow down mail service.
  • Those delays come as the country grapples with the coronavirus pandemic and looks ahead to the presidential election.
  • In a press conference Monday morning, Peters noted that he has heard from hundreds of Michigan residents who say they have had sudden delays in vital mail service.
