LANSING — In case you missed it, not only is Trump’s billionaire-first budget going to kick thousands of people off Medicaid, it will also devastate Michigan seniors on Medicare too. Despite their many promises not to, Trump and his Republican Congressional cronies are robbing Medicare of nearly $500 billion over the next 10 years — which will cost thousands of Michiganders their health care and reduce the coverage for thousands more.
Already, Michigan hospitals, clinics, and nursing homes are under attack from the Trump administration’s budget bill and its cuts to Medicaid; now, as Congressional Republicans like John James, Tom Barrett, and Bill Huizenga help add $3.4 trillion to the deficit, providers will lose Medicare funding too as automatic budget cuts are made to make up for the added debt. This means seniors could get kicked out of their nursing homes and buried in debt without the Medicare coverage they and their families rely on.
It wasn’t enough to gut care for patients with cancer and kids with asthma, now Trump is taking it from our vulnerable seniors — and Michigan Republicans helped him do it. It’s despicable, and Michigan Democrats will do everything they can to protect our seniors.

Detroit News: Trump tax law could cause Medicare cuts if Congress doesn’t act, CBO says
- The federal budget deficits caused by President Donald Trump’s tax and spending law could trigger automatic cuts to Medicare if Congress does not act, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office reported Friday.
- The CBO estimates that Medicare, the federal health insurance program for Americans over age 65, could potentially see as much as $491 billion from 2027 to 2034 if Congress does not act to mitigate a 2010 law that forces across-the-board cuts to many federal programs once legislation increases the federal deficit…
- “Republicans knew their tax breaks for billionaires would force over half a trillion dollars in Medicare cuts — and they did it anyway,” said Rep. Brendan F. Boyle, the top Democrat on the House Budget Committee, in a statement. “American families simply cannot afford Donald Trump’s attacks on Medicare, Medicaid, and Obamacare.”
- Hospitals in rural parts of the country are already grappling with cuts to Medicaid, which is available to people with low incomes, and cuts to Medicare could exacerbate their shortfalls.
