ICYMI: State Rep. Julie Brixie, Lansing Seniors Blast GOP for Plans to Cut Social Security

Last Friday, ahead of the 87th anniversary of Social Security, the Michigan Democratic Party rallied outside the Republican Center in Lansing with State Representative Julie Brixie and local seniors to blast Michigan Republicans in Congress like Jack Bergman (MI-01) and Bill Huizenga (MI-04) for their plan to gut the federal program.

Speakers emphasized how critical it is that Michiganders re-elect Democrats like Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin who are fighting to lower costs on prescription drugs, make health care affordable, and ensure seniors’ benefits are protected.

Here’s a look at what Michiganders are seeing as Democrats and community members call out extremist Michigan Republicans for their plan to cut Social Security benefits:

Brixie and other Democrats are pointing to a plan from a group of congressional Republicans suggesting changing the benefit formula for new retirees and the retirement age.

He said he worries some ideas floated around Congress like privatizing Social Security benefits would put retirees in the hands of the stock market.

MIRS: Brixie Criticizes Michigan Congressional Social Security Cuts

Rep. Julie BRIXIE (D-Meridian Township) met with Lansing area seniors today to mark the 87th anniversary of federal Social Security benefits and criticize attempts to make cuts to the program.

The conference was part of Michigan Dems “Too Extreme GOP” tour criticizing congressional Republicans for cuts to social security and other agenda items. A release from the Michigan Democratic Party named U.S. Reps. Jack BERGMAN (R),  John MOOLENAAR (R), Bill HUIZENGA (R), Tim WALBERG (R) and Lisa MCCLAIN (R).

Brixie referenced a congressional Republican Study Committee that recently unveiled a “Blueprint to Save America.”

Democrats say the plan would drastically cut Medicare and Social Security benefits by raising age requirements and taking money away.

But Lansing senior Nancy YAEGER said the Republican committee’s plan to cut funding is “deeply heartbreaking.”

“This money doesn’t come out of thin air,” she said. “We’ve spent years paying into this program on the basis that it would support us when we retire.”
