ICYMI: President Biden Joins Whitmer, Michigan Democrats to Celebrate CHIPS and Science Act

Yesterday, President Biden was joined by Governor Whitmer were joined by U.S. Senators Stabenow and Peters, and Congressman Kildee to sign the CHIPS and Science Act into law. At Hemlock Semiconductor Operations, the president and Michigan Democrats highlighted this “once-in-a-century” investment in American industry and the positive impact it will have on working Michiganders.

While every Michigan Democrat in Congress voted for this vital legislation that will bring jobs back to the Great Lakes State, secure our domestic supply chain, and protect our national security, five Michigan Republicans voted against this bill.

Here’s what Michiganders are reading about the latest example of President Biden and Democrats delivering for Michiganders:

Biden hailed the bipartisan CHIPS package as an example of the government coming together for a common goal to recharge the American economy and remain competitive with China.

“This is a big freakin’ deal for Michigan,” Stabenow said. “We’re seeing a renaissance in manufacturing here in Michigan and in America.”

The act will fund $52 billion in incentives to boost domestic semiconductor production and research, $2 billion of which is dedicated to incentivizing production of the “mature node” semiconductors used by automakers and parts supplies.

“The bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act will make a once-in-a-century investment in American industry to create and protect tens of thousands of jobs, bring supply chain from China to Michigan, and help lower costs for working families on electronics, cars, and so much more,” said Governor Whitmer.

“For the sake of our economy and jobs and cost and national security, we have to make these semiconductors in America once again,” President Biden said. “This bill funds the entire semiconductor supply chain, from research and development to key inputs of polysilicon manufactured at Hemlock. The progress we’re making is proof that we’re the United States of America. There’s nothing beyond our capacity when we work together.”

“The ongoing chip crisis is having a stark impact on Michigan. We need to move fast, which is why I signed an executive directive today preparing Michigan to harness every available resource from the CHIPS and Science Act to set up our state for decades of growth. I will fight hard to ensure that Michigan brings home as many resources as possible from the CHIPS and Science Act, and I look forward to unleashing our state’s potential. Let’s keep putting the world on notice and show everyone that Michigan is the place to build the future.”

The event coincided with Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signing an executive directive to ensure the state “is ready for the influx of resources” appropriated through the new legislation, according to the directive.

The executive directive requires state agencies to review the new legislation and move to maximize Michigan’s allocation of federal funds, to prioritize permitting related to semiconductor projects and to work with the industry to attract private-sector investment in the state.
