ICYMI: MIGOP Chair Barely Holding Onto Leadership, But Problems Won’t End with Karamo’s Removal

Even with continued calls for Karamo’s removal, the MIGOP leadership isn’t the problem – the party is fundamentally broken

LANSING — In case you missed it, the Detroit News released a damning article this weekend detailing the ever-growing chaos within the extremist MIGOP over divisive MAGA enthusiast – and MIGOP Chair – Kristina Karamo. As her critics seek a special meeting to remove her from her leadership position, Karamo is trying to take power away from those same detractors.

But let’s be clear, the trouble with the MIGOP doesn’t end with Karamo, and won’t go away if she’s removed from power. This is not an isolated incident –  it is clear that the entire MIGOP is as divisive and radical as Karamo has proven to be. With MAGA Matt Hall and disgraced former Gov. Rick Snyder – who poisoned Flint – currently trying to step up as leaders outside of the official party, it’s important to remember that they will uphold the same radical agenda that is wildly out of step with the values of Michiganders. If Karamo is ousted, we guarantee that anyone who takes her place will keep falling down the rabbit hole of extremism.

This is a party that clearly has no interest in delivering results for Michiganders and does not deserve to lead Michigan at any level.

Detroit News: Michigan Republicans seek special meeting to consider unseating Chair Kristina Karamo

  • A group of Michigan Republicans submitted a request Saturday afternoon calling for a special meeting of the GOP’s state committee on Dec. 27 to consider the removal of Chairwoman Kristina Karamo…
  • Severe fundraising shortfalls and widening internal divisions have defined her first nine months in the job. Karamo has taken committee assignments away from some of her opponents, has criticized past donors to the party and failed to make good on a campaign promise of obtaining funding from 500,000 “likely-Republican business owners…”
  • As recently as five years ago, Michigan Republicans controlled the governor’s office and the state House and Senate. But a string of election losses has left them without majorities in the House and Senate, and Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer won a second term by 10 percentage points in November 2022. In that same election, Karamo lost her bid to become Michigan’s secretary of state by 14 percentage points.
  • The Michigan Republican Party had about $35,000 in its bank accounts in August…and a former member of the Michigan GOP’s budget committee, Jessica Barefield of Livingston County, said in November, the party was facing “imminent default’ on its line of credit.
