ICYMI: Michigan Republicans Exposed for Betraying Their Districts by Voting Against Reproductive Rights

Unsurprisingly, MAGA MIGOP members ignore the will of their districts in favor of their own radical agenda

LANSING — ICYMI last week, The Gander highlighted exactly how little key MIGOP representatives care about their constituents after they voted against the Reproductive Health Act (RHA). Instead of listening to their voters, these MAGA Republicans, led by extremist-in-chief MAGA Matt Hall, tried to shove their anti-choice agenda at a Michigan that clearly supports reproductive freedom.

While we shouldn’t be surprised that Republicans are hellbent on tearing down abortion rights, it is still shocking to see how openly they disregarded their own constituents’ votes. So-called “leaders” like MAGA Matt Hall voted against the RHA even when the majority of his very own district supported the Prop 3 Right to Reproductive Freedom Initiative last year, leading the way for other GOP members to turn against their communities as well.

Take a look at how badly just a few of the many GOP members ignored the will of the people:

  • State Rep. Donni Steele represents a district where 60% of voters last year supported Prop 3
  • State Rep. Mark Tisdel represents a district where 59% of voters last year supported Prop 3
  • State Rep. Alicia St. Germaine represents a district where 58% of her district voted for Prop 3

The Gander: 12 Michigan Republicans who rejected their own districts’ views on abortion

  • But when the Reproductive Health Act came up for a vote this year, many Republican state lawmakers effectively turned their backs on their own voters by rejecting the legislation—including lawmakers who represent districts that clearly supported Proposal 3.
  • Among them: Republican House Minority Leader Matt Hall, who voted against every bill in the package despite a clear majority (55%) of voters in his district voting for Proposal 3.
  • “While we know there is more progress to be made, this legislation is an important step toward promoting equity and justice,” Michigan Democratic Party Chairwoman Lavora Barnes said in a statement. “The Freedom Caucus and MAGA Matt Hall’s MIGOP members have made it clear that they will undermine reproductive freedom at any chance they get, and we are so thankful that Democrats delivered this win for Michiganders to protect abortion rights for years to come.”
