ICYMI: Michigan Democrats Slam Trump Outside Warren Event

WARREN– Yesterday, Michigan Democrats and worker Tony Durkacs slammed Donald Trump for his broken promises to Michigan workers, highlighting the 5,300 manufacturing jobs lost in the state last year and the nearby General Motors Warren Transmission plant that shut down. Here’s what they’re saying:

The state’s Democratic Party leader on Thursday criticized President Donald Trump for “broken promises” and a “toxic economic agenda” ahead of his visit to a Macomb County auto supplier.

Barnes noted Trump’s promise to preserve manufacturing jobs, yet plants have shut down in Wayne County, Downriver and elsewhere in Michigan. The state lost 5,300 manufacturing jobs in 2019 alone, she said.

“These broken promises by Donald Trump are yet more evidence that we cannot afford four more years of this ineffective president,” said Barnes, who was joined Thursday by Macomb County Commissioner Robert Mijac, D-Sterling Heights, and longtime auto mechanic, Tony Durkacs of Redford Township.

Meanwhile, Michigan Democrats highlighted a recent jobs report, released by the U.S. Department of Labor, which found Michigan lost 5,300 manufacturing jobs in 2019. Michigan Democratic Party Chair Lavora Barnes also highlighted last summer’s closure of General Motors’ Warren Transmission Plant.

“During his campaign, Donald Trump stood here in Warren and told us, ‘if I’m elected, you won’t lose one plant,’” Barnes said. “For the 5,300 manufacturing workers in Michigan who lost their jobs last year, these broken promises by Donald Trump are yet more evidence that we cannot afford four more years of this ineffective president.”

“Donald Trump has broken promise after promise to Michigan workers,” said auto worker Tony Durkacs. “He said he’d tackle prescription drug costs, but prices are skyrocketing for basic drugs like insulin. He said he’d cut our taxes, but instead gave his rich friends a handout and attacked Social Security.”

“They see the side of our state that Donald Trump refuses to mention. The side he ignores because it tells an inconvenient story of promises made and promises broken. During his campaign, Donald Trump stood here in Warren and told us, ‘if I’m elected, you won’t lose one plant.’ Just last Friday, we learned Michigan lost 5,300 manufacturing jobs in the last year alone,” Michigan Democratic Party Chair Lavora Barnes said.

Trump’s promise to the Great Lakes was another remark that didn’t go unnoticed by the Democrats in Michigan.

“He promised to protect clean water in Michigan but fights to allow pollution in our waterways. Michiganders need to stand against his attacks and elect a president who fights for everyday people,” Democratic worker Tony Durkacs said through a press release.
