“Cheap words and empty promises can’t undo the damage he has done to our state.”
LANSING– As Donald Trump traveled to Ypsilanti for campaign events and a victory lap over his failed COVID-19 response, Michigan Democrats held him accountable for his inadequate and erratic handling of the global pandemic. Here’s what Michigan is reading about the trip:
But the president’s distractions might not be all that distracting, with Democrats first to call him out.
“Today’s events were pathetic, partisan campaign stunts from a president who is becoming increasingly desperate as he sees Michigan slipping through his fingers,” Michigan Democratic party chair Lavora Barnes said in a statement. “Cheap words and empty promises can’t undo the damage he has done to our state.”
Michigan Democrats slammed Trump’s visit, saying that it shows he is “tone deaf” to economic turmoil states are facing in the coronavirus crisis.
“He should not be going on a parade to highlight himself at a time when people are dying, when people are getting very sick, when people are continuing to lose their jobs,” said Michigan state Rep. Yousef Rabhi.
“Instead of parading around the country like he’s doing, President Trump should be in Washington trying to solve these, you know, vital issues and get us the resources that we need to be able to preserve jobs.”
Michigan Democratic Party Chairwoman Lavora Barnes criticized Trump for what she characterized as a sluggish response to the pandemic.
“When nurses in Detroit hospitals went without PPE, Donald Trump was sitting on his hands and telling us to figure things out ourselves,” Barnes told reporters Wednesday. “When we were facing severe ventilator shortages weeks ago he attacked hospitals for hoarding them. When Detroit became a hotspot and hundreds were dying he told Mike Pence ‘don’t talk to that woman from Michigan.’”
Michigan’s Democratic Party released a statement on the visit, criticizing the president for ignoring the threat of the disease when it was first detected.
“When faced with the greatest public health crisis of our lifetime, Donald Trump called COVID-19 a hoax and downplayed the threat for months, failed to get frontline healthcare workers the PPE they need to fight the pandemic, and tried to cast blame on everybody but himself as he played political games with Michiganders’ lives,” party chair Lavora Barnes said in the statement. “Now, as the economy spirals downward and the pandemic continues, he is desperately attempting to take a victory lap with a sham political rally disguised as a presidential visit.”
Michigan Democratic Party Chairwoman Lavora Barnes placed the blame on Trump’s shoulders for the virus’ impact on Detroit.
“It appears the curve is now flattening, but where was this president during Detroit’s time of need? He was attacking our governor and playing political games with black people’s lives,” Barnes told reporters Wednesday. “Now after months of neglect and disinterest, Trump thinks he can win Detroit’s black community with a cheap messaging stunt. Let me be very clear: It’s not going to happen.”
“The truth is that Donald Trump has stumbled from crisis to crisis during this pandemic and Michigan has suffered as a result,” said Lavora Barnes, the party’s chairwoman. “No amount of empty words and lip service can undo the damage done by his failures.”

Lavora Barnes, chairwoman of the Michigan Democratic Party, called Trump’s visit to the Ford plant “a sham political rally disguised as a presidential visit.”
“This president offers Michigan nothing but broken promises and messaging gimmicks meant to distract from his erratic and inadequate response to COVID-19,” Barnes said in a statement. “The truth is that Donald Trump has stumbled from crisis to crisis during this pandemic and Michigan has suffered as a result.
