In case you missed it, Macomb County veteran Wayne Conner II penned a letter to the editor in the Macomb Daily calling out John James’ silence as former and current top defense officials including General Jim Mattis characterize President Trump as a threat to the Constitution following the use of law enforcement and National Guard troops to violently disperse peaceful protesters outside the White House for a Trump photo-op.
Michiganders like Conner are questioning why John James, a U.S. Army veteran, won’t join his fellow veterans in defending the oath they swore to uphold.

Macomb Daily: Why is John James silent?
By: Wayne Conner II
- When I signed up to serve our country, I took a sacred oath. I swore to support and defend the constitution. It is an oath veterans, and politicians, take…some more seriously than others it would appear.
- I am disgusted by the actions taken by President Trump this week. His blatant disregard for this oath was despicable enough for Marine General James Mattis to speak up.
- Mattis said that “We must reject and hold accountable those in office who would make a mockery of our Constitution…Donald Trump is the first president in my lifetime who does not try to unite the American people—does not even pretend to try. Instead, he tries to divide us.”
- While Mattis breaks his self-imposed censorship, U.S. senate candidate John James remains silent. James took this same oath when he served in the Army and would take it again if he became Michigan’s senator. I know that James respects Mattis, he once called him one of the “greatest military minds in the world.”
- If James believes he deserves the honor of serving Michiganders in the Senate, why is he remaining silent? We deserve a leader who will speak up at all moments of injustice.
- We deserve someone like Senator Gary Peters who has joined Mattis in speaking out in this moment, noting the oath he took as an officer in U.S. Navy Reserve to protect and defend the U.S. Constitution.
