Emphasizes Importance for Underserved and Communities of Color: “They should not have to worry about the hospital bill, they should be focused on getting healthy and getting through the COVID pandemic”
In case you missed it, U.S. Senator Gary Peters joined Reverend Al Sharpton on MSNBC Saturday where he discussed the need for a special health care enrollment period and why it’s important specifically for underserved and communities of color in Michigan who have been disproportionately impacted by the pandemic, to have access to affordable, quality health care.
- “Well, you would think that folks would fully appreciate the need for everybody to have access to quality, affordable health care at a time that we’re in the middle of a pandemic that is taking tens of thousands of lives all across our country. Under the Affordable Care Act, which provides that kind of coverage, there is an open enrollment period once a year. But what I’ve been advocating is that we need to have open enrollment now.”
- “Anybody should be able to sign up for the Affordable Care Act, no matter who they are, no matter where they live, to be able to get that affordable quality care and yet the Trump administration has said no. We know that folks come down with COVID-19 and we certainly know that disproportionate impact on underserved communities and communities of color. And although we’ve made great strides in providing more health care, thanks to President Obama and the Affordable Care Act, we still need to have more people sign up to have access to that health care.”
- “And now’s the time to do that. To make sure that we’re helping people in a time of need, that if they have to go to the hospital they know that those costs are going to be covered. They should not have to worry about the hospital bill, they should be focused on getting healthy and getting through the COVID pandemic.”
