Extremist Republicans are yet again trying to push an anti-abortion agenda onto Michigan, regardless of the damage it causes
LANSING — In case you missed it, five members of the MIGOP signed onto a brief in a major case before the US Supreme Court, FDA v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine, that seeks to ban access to mifepristone, a pill used in medication abortions. Michigan Republican Reps. Jack Bergman, Bill Huizenga, Lisa McClain, John Moolenaar, and Tim Walberg have all signed on in a clear effort to double down on their radical anti-woman, anti-abortion agenda.
The goal of these anti-abortion extremists in Michigan and across the country has always been to ban all abortion care – there’s no way to sugarcoat it. And a ban on mifepristone is their next step at chipping away Michiganders’ health care rights. Republicans are clearly desperate, and they know this ban would make abortions more complicated, time-consuming, and expensive — making medication abortion inaccessible for the thousands of women who rely on it.
Let’s get something straight: medical decisions should be made by women and their doctors — not politicians. This court case is a direct threat to all of Michigan Dems’ work to strengthen abortion protections in our state. Michiganders have made their support for abortion access loud and clear by approving the Right to Reproductive Freedom Initiative – Proposition 3 – in 2022, but Republicans continue to relentlessly pursue an extreme, anti-abortion agenda at every turn.
Michigan Republicans are dead set on stripping women of their right to bodily autonomy and pushing a far-right agenda that is out of touch with Michigan values.

The Gander: Michigan Republicans ask Supreme Court to restrict medication abortion access
- Nearly 150 Republican lawmakers, including five US representatives from the state of Michigan, filed a brief with the US Supreme Court last week urging it to significantly restrict access to the nation’s most commonly prescribed form of abortion medication…
- The recent legal filing asks the nation’s top court to restrict access to mifepristone—one of two drugs used in more than half of abortions nationwide—by prohibiting it from being used after seven weeks of pregnancy, being sent through the mail, or being prescribed via telemedicine.
- It’s shaping up to be the biggest legal battle over reproductive healthcare since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade—and the new brief makes clear that Republicans still want to inject themselves into personal health decisions and peel back reproductive rights nationwide…
- The long-dormant federal law cited in the GOP’s brief is known as the Comstock Act—which makes it a federal crime to to send or deliver “obscene, lewd or lascivious” material through the mail or by other carriers, and specifically includes items used for abortion or birth control.
