Yesterday, the chaotic Republican gubernatorial primary faced yet another twist as Ryan Kelley was arrested by the FBI during a raid on his home for multiple criminal charges stemming from his participation in the violent insurrection that took place on the grounds of the U.S. Capitol on January 6th, 2021 and resulted in five deaths and 140 injured law enforcement officers.
Despite Kelley being the only charged insurrectionist competing for the governor’s office, the rest of the field was quick to jump to his defense and embrace an insurrectionist who is on video shouting “this is war, baby!” while storming the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to prevent a peaceful transition of power after the last election.
And showing just how far the MIGOP has devolved, co-chairs Meshawn Maddock – who organized busloads of insurrectionists – and Ron Weiser also lined up behind self-described “political prisoner” Kelley, once again showed working families that the entire Republican party remains fixated on the past and undermining our democracy to keep themselves in power rather than the solutions that will keep Michigan first for decades to come.
MDP spokesperson Rodericka Applewhaite issued the following statement:
“This entire debased crop of Republican gubernatorial candidates – just got slashed in half due to a massive forgery scandal – have once again sidestepped the opportunity to stand for democracy and acknowledge personal responsibility. Ryan Kelley stormed the U.S. Capitol and participated in a violent insurrection to overturn the results of the 2020 election. The fact that that’s now supported behavior gives Michiganders a crystal clear picture of just how far the MIGOP and its candidates will go to gain power.”

Kevin Rinke: I respect Ryan Kelley and have met him out on the trail. My hope is that the FBI is acting appropriately, because the timing here raises serious questions. Praying for him and his family.

Tudor Dixon: Are we expected to believe the corrupt FBI happened to schedule a raid on Ryan Kelley’s home the same day of the J6 production in DC? The timing of this looks a lot like another example of political prosecution by a Democrat Party notorious for weaponizing government.
Meshawn Maddock: Do people really get their homes raided and arrested in front of their children over a misdemeanor? Democrats are out in force weaponizing our justice system and targeting their political opponents.
Ron Weiser: Democrats are weaponizing our justice system in an unprecedented way against their political opponents. We are not a third world nation. Law and order are the bedrock of our democracy, but justice is not served when it is driven by a political agenda. Families and children are not becoming victims of political theater meant to distract from the failures of Democrat policy. It’s shameful and must end.
