Donald Trump failed to contain COVID-19 and now Michiganders are forced to live with the devastating consequences. This week, during the Republican National Convention, the Michigan Democratic Party is highlighting how that failure is creating crises across the state. From schools, to our health care system, to the economy, no part of our state is safe from the fallout from Trump’s chaotic leadership.
The Michigan economy has been thrown into crisis because of Donald Trump’s failed COVID-19 response. After months of denial and claims that the pandemic is “totally under control,” workers and small businesses have suffered the consequences of a disease that has killed over 6,000 Michiganders and infected almost 100,000. Over six months after the crisis began, Michigan’s unemployment rate is still double the March rate and 1 in 7 businesses are not confident they will survive the pandemic. As the economic devastation continues, the layoffs are becoming long lasting, as thousands of previously temporary layoffs become permanent.
“For over six months, Donald Trump stuck his head in the sand and downplayed the threats posed by a deadly pandemic and now Michiganders are forced to suffer the consequences,” said Michigan Democratic Party spokesman Christian Slater. “Now, millions have lost their jobs, countless small businesses have been forced to shutter, and the economic pain is becoming permanent because of our president’s chaotic leadership. This economic crisis didn’t have to be this bad. With real leaders like Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, we can get this country back on track, defeat COVID-19, and build our country back better.”
