It’s Older Americans Month and Republicans are putting Michigan seniors’ Medicare and Social Security benefits at risk by doubling down on a plan that calls for sunsetting all federal legislation after five years, including Medicare and Social ySecurity. While Michigan Democrats are standing by seniors to protect Medicare and Social Security and lower the cost of lifesaving prescription drugs, the Republican plan could put 2.1 million health coverages and 2.3 million Social Security payments on the chopping block.
“While Michigan Democrats remain committed to our state’s seniors this Older Americans Month, Republicans are busy pushing a plan that would put Medicare and Social Security at risk for over two million recipients in our state. For generations, Michiganders have paid into these programs with the promise that they would one day reap their benefits — but Republicans’ plan puts that promise in jeopardy,” said Michigan Democratic Party Chair Lavora Barnes. “Our seniors deserve to know if Bergman, Huizenga, Meijer, McClain, Moolenaar, and Walberg will stand by this plan come November. Meanwhile, President Biden and Democrats will continue fighting for, not against, our seniors by lowering health care costs and bolstering Social Security. Michigan seniors’ choice this November couldn’t be clearer — Democrats will protect these programs, and Republicans would end them.”
While Republicans are threatening seniors’ hard earned benefits, President Biden and Democrats have proposed measures to bolster Social Security and responsibly reduce the deficit without touching Medicare or Social Security by making billionaires pay their fair share in taxes – while also lowering costs for working families.
