GOP Gov. Candidates Endorsed By Anti-Choice Group as They Support Banning Abortion

LANSING — Right to Life Michigan—which recently lost a federal lawsuit seeking to strike down Michigan’s fundamental constitutional right to reproductive freedom—has now endorsed Republican candidates for governor John James, Perry Johnson, Mike Cox, and Aric Nesbitt.

As Right to Life Michigan endorses their campaigns, each of the Republican candidates supports restricting reproductive rights:

  • John James has compared abortion to “genocide,” said that he is “100% pro-life,” and supported Roe v. Wade being overturned. James also has an A+ rating in Congress from SBA Pro-Life America. In November, James attended a Right to Life of Michigan dinner.
  • Perry Johnson declined to rule out banning abortion for sexual assault and rape survivors when he launched his failed campaign in 2022 and said “two wrongs don’t make a right. I am pro-life.”

“The entire Republican field for governor all support banning abortion and ripping away reproductive healthcare, so this endorsement is no surprise,” said Michigan Democratic Party spokesperson Derrick Honeyman. “Right to Life Michigan just lost a lawsuit where they sought to roll back Michigan’s constitutional right to reproductive freedom—an amendment that was passed overwhelmingly by voters. With this anti-choice group’s endorsement, it’s clear the GOP candidates for governor are more focused on rolling back freedoms and restricting rights than they are on lowering costs or making life better for Michiganders.”
