Gary Peters Secures Hospital and COVID-19 Testing Funding Opposed By Republicans

Original Republican Legislation Included $0 for Hospital and Health Care Providers, No Dedicated Funding for Minority-Owned Businesses

Senator Gary Peters worked to pass bipartisan legislation that will provide urgently needed relief to small businesses including minority-owned businesses and community lenders, and new funding for hospitals and COVID-19 testing. Peters once again put Michigan first by securing billions of additional dollars on top of the $250 billion Republicans originally requested for small businesses and is working to ensure accountability in how small business loans are being distributed.

While additional work is still needed, Peters worked to ensure funding in this bipartisan package that would help businesses that need it most including minority-owned, unbanked, and underserved small businesses and nonprofits. This funding will help small businesses with key expenses and keep their workers on the payroll.

Here’s what Republicans proposed and urged Democrats to pass, compared to what Peters delivered for Michigan in the final bipartisan bill:

“Gary Peters has worked non-stop throughout this crisis to ensure Michigan’s small businesses, hospitals, and front line health care workers receive the relief they need,” said Michigan Democratic Party spokesperson Elena Kuhn. “Once again Republicans in Michigan were eager to stand with Mitch McConnell and ram through a bill that left Michigan behind. While there’s still work to be done, this bipartisan deal shows that Gary is fighting to put Michigan first.”
