FACT SHEET: How the Biden-Harris Administration is Delivering Clean Drinking Water to Michigan

In President Biden’s first year in the Oval Office, he’s proved he’s willing to fight and deliver for Michigan’s right to clean drinking water. Under his leadership and a close partnership with Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Michigan Democrats passed the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that will send Michigan $1.3 billion to replace lead pipes and ensure safe, clean drinking water for every neighborhood.

“Access to clean drinking water through federal dollars will be lifesaving for many families in Michigan, because clean water isn’t just a want, it’s a need,” said Michigan Democratic Party Spokesperson Alyssa Bradley. “We’ve seen the harm lead pipes can do to health from childhood to adulthood, but with President Biden’s historic Bipartisan Infrastructure Law we can finally tackle these health and safety issues for underserved communities. Come 2022, Michigan Republicans will have to answer to their constituents for why they voted ‘No’ on ensuring every household in Michigan has access to clean, safe drinking water.”

The Biden-Harris Administration is working hard to bring clean drinking water to every Michigan household by:

  • Allocating $1.3 billion in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to improve water infrastructure across the state, guaranteeing clean water in all communities.
    • Currently up to 10,000 households and 400,000 schools and child care centers lack access to clean drinking water.
    • Under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, federal dollars and direction under Governor Whitmer will see the elimination of lead service lines and replacement of lead pipes so the thousands of Michiganders who currently lack access to clean water, can have it.
  • Using the Biden-Harris administration’s Lead Pipe and Paint Action Plan to ensure pipefitters and plumbers can lay the groundwork for the next decade of drinking water infrastructure upgrades
    • Lead in drinking water pipes, faucets, paint, and walls threatens the health and well-being of American families and children across the country.
    • With the Lead Pipe and Paint Action Plan, the EPA will send an additional $3 billion to states in 2022 for lead service line replacements, prioritize underserved communities, increase lead testing in homes and water pipes, and more.
