Every Republican on stage refused to confront the causes of gun violence and made clear they will not enact any meaningful policy changes to protect kids and families.
For school shootings in particular, Republicans went out of their way to address everything but the actual problem that puts our children in harm’s way:
- Kevin Rinke pledged to “defend the second amendment…at all costs” and proposed enlisting former military service members to become “hall monitors.” The out-of-touch millionaire also endorsed a one-door building structure – the latest fake solution to distract from substantive conversations on gun violence prevention.
- Tudor Dixon similarly backed the nonsense one-door approach, dismissed gun-free zones as “sitting duck zones,” and argued that Michigan’s Oxford High shooting wouldn’t have happened if armed guards were present.
- Garrett Soldano claimed America doesn’t have a gun problem, instead baselessly placing the blame on a vague “culture problem,” mental health, and social media. Like the others, Soldano also advocated for arming people in school, including teachers, and implementing one point of entry.
- Like the rest of the field, Ryan Kelley used one of the debates to blame a whole host of unrelated factors such as fatherless homes and gender identity.
