DeVos and Trump Threaten Funding for Michigan Schools Amid Global Pandemic

As Donald Trump stumbles through his sixth month of his disastrous response to COVID-19, the failed president is partnering with Betsy DeVos to force Michigan schools open against guidelines created by his own government.

To force the opening, Trump threatened funding for Michigan schools, saying he, “may cut off funding if not open!” while DeVos stated she is “very seriously” looking into withholding federal funds. The threat comes as Michigan has seen over 6,000 deaths from COVID-19 and cases have begun to rise again in the state. Trump and Devos have failed to release a plan or secure funding to safely reopen schools.

Despite Trump’s lack of leadership, Governor Whitmer has released a comprehensive roadmap for a safe return to K-12 education while ensuring schools have the flexibility they require.

“Donald Trump is partnering with Betsy DeVos to put Michigan students and teachers in harm’s way as he fails to contain a deadly pandemic,” said Michigan Democratic Party spokesman Christian Slater. “This reckless, forced reopening comes from a desperate president with no plan to keep our students or our teachers safe from his failures.”
