Detroit Faith and Community Leaders Hold John James Accountable for Out of Touch Coronavirus Response

Detroit-area faith and community leaders are holding John James accountable for his failure to demonstrate real leadership in responding to COVID-19. James has refused to answer questions from the press for months – avoiding Michigan TV for 295 days and Michigan newspapers for 188 days – and in a recent op-ed, did not acknowledge the massive challenges Michiganders face, including record-high unemployment claims and medical equipment shortages, let alone present any solutions. The leaders noted a pattern of James ignoring the needs of the state, another example of how he is not right for Michigan.

“In times of adversity our community must stand together and look out for one another. That includes people that want to be leaders in our state, who should be focused on helping our families,” said Rev. Dee Dee Coleman, Pastor of the Russell Street Missionary Baptist Church. “Sadly, John James’ response to this crisis doesn’t seem to grasp what our community needs right now.”

“Small businesses are facing some of the greatest challenges ever, and we’re seeing so many people step up to the plate,” said Detroit business leader Victor L. Marsh, Sr., Managing Director/CEO, The Victor Marsh Group, LLC. “But time and again, John James has failed to show up and this is just another example. We appreciate the leadership of those working to find clear solutions to keep Michigan’s business community afloat.”

“Being a public servant means putting the needs of others above your own, and taking clear-eyed action during difficult times,” said Eric Sabree, Wayne County Treasurer. “That’s just not the kind of leadership we’re seeing from John James, who hasn’t offered any solutions or innovative ideas to relieve our community during this crisis.”
