Congressman Kildee, Michigan Electeds Highlight Progress Made By Democrats Ahead of President Biden’s State of the Union

Michigan Dems Blast Republicans for Attempting to Block Democrats’ Recovery Plan and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law

Today, ahead of President Biden’s first State of the Union, the Michigan Democratic Party held a press conference with elected officials from across Michigan. Joined by Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05), State Rep. Rachel Hood (HD-76), State Rep. Sarah Anthony (HD-68), and Lansing Mayor Andy Schor, Michigan Democrats highlighted the progress made by the Biden-Harris administration and Michigan Democrats over the last year.

The state and local leaders on today’s call highlighted how President Biden’s American Rescue Plan and Bipartisan Infrastructure Law will help Michigan build back better for generations to come. Speakers also blasted Michigan Republicans for attempting to block an economic recovery plan and infrastructure law that invested in working families and small businesses across the state.

“In his first year in office, President Biden and Democrats in Congress have passed major legislation to grow our economy and create Michigan jobs. Thanks to the American Rescue Plan we delivered economic relief and stimulus checks to every American, we got our kids back in the classroom safely, and we supported many small businesses during this pandemic—and because of the American Rescue Plan, we’re seeing the fastest economic growth rate in nearly 40 years,” said Congressman Kildee of President Biden’s first year in office. “We also passed the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to deliver much-needed investments to rebuild roads, to repair bridges, to remove lead pipes, and to expand broadband internet.”

“We’ve learned that at the federal level that Republicans just don’t have a plan. I’m proud to be part of a [Democratic] Party that is focusing on making progress in this crucial moment in our country’s history. We are leading and navigating our way out of this pandemic rather than offering no solutions and blocking an agenda that moves our country forward,” said State Rep. Rachel Hood. “It’s shameful that our representation in Congress, Peter Meijer, can’t be a part of the celebrations our community has for the funding we receive. Luckily every Michigan Democrat voted to invest in communities, small businesses, and people, even though Rep. Meiher decided to play politics with our daily lives.”

“We’ve been able to utilize federal dollars to serve people in our community. Make no mistake, whether it was the American Rescue Plan that brought billions of dollars to our capital region or the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law…this is transformative,” said State Rep. Sarah Anthony. “This is going to ensure that we build back our communities better than we left them. Because in this historic time, this is a time for us to serve people better, to make sure Downtown Lansing businesses remain open, that our international airport here in the Capitol City continues to thrive.”

“[The American Rescue Plan] was a lifesaver for the city of Lansing,” said Lansing Mayor Andy Schor. “We were able to backfill our losses, we were able to put more money into our small businesses, we were able to look at our services and give money to those who needed rental assistance. Without this, I don’t know what the cities would have done… this was truly one of the great moments in our nation and it was provided by this Congress and this President.”
