Nearly 40 years after Justice Brian Zahra helped then-girlfriend get an abortion, he voted to block abortion rights ballot measure
LANSING – A bombshell NBC News report shows the galling hypocrisy of Michigan Supreme Court Justice Brian Zahra’s views on reproductive rights.
The judge voted to block the ballot initiative aimed at enshrining abortion rights in the Michigan Constitution nearly 40 years after helping his then-girlfriend get an abortion. The report also noted that anti-choice groups are among those that have contributed to Zahra’s re-election campaign.
“It’s the height of hypocrisy that Justice Brian Zahra would use his position to restrict access to abortion except when it benefits his life and career. Zahra is a hypocrite who has taken the saying ‘Do as I say, not as I do’ to new levels,” said Lavora Barnes, chair of the Michigan Democratic Party. “Zahra is happy to go along with restricting access to abortion for women in Michigan when it comes with gobs of contributions from anti-choice organizations for his campaign but it’s a different story when it comes to his personal life.”
“Democrats are the clear choice in the race for seats on the Michigan Supreme Court,” Barnes said. “Returning Justice Richard Bernstein to the bench and electing state Rep. Kyra Bolden to Michigan’s highest court would be a clear benefit to the entire state.”`
