Today, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced their Bridge Replacement, Rehabilitation, Preservation, Protection, and Construction Program (Bridge Formula Program), funded by the Biden-Harris administration’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The program is the largest dedicated investment in bridges since the construction of the interstate highway system.
In total, Michigan will receive $563 million over the next five years to upgrade and rebuild the state’s bridges — including the 1,219 bridges in “poor” condition according to the Federal Highway Administration. In 2022 alone, the Michigan Department of Transportation can expect $112.6 million and it’s all thanks to President Biden and Michigan Democrats. Now, Michiganders are one step closer to safer driving conditions, strong bridge infrastructure, and increased job creation across the state.
The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law will build upon Governor Whitmer’s current leadership in fixing the damn roads and repairing Michigan’s infrastructure, from Marquette all the way down to Detroit. In November, the Governor signed an executive directive to ensure funds received from this law were used efficiently and quickly to start laying the groundwork for upgraded infrastructure. Thanks to her leadership, Michigan localities are prepped and ready to start using these federal dollars as soon as possible.
