Tomorrow, January 22, marks the 49th anniversary of the landmark Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision that assured the right to choose for tens of millions of women across the country. As the Supreme Court looks poised to dismantle Roe v. Wade, governors will be the last line of defense against dangerous abortion bans for the first time in nearly 50 years.
This week, MDP has been highlighting what Michiganders would face under the extreme GOP candidates running for governor.
Tudor Dixon has stated the most extreme views of the bunch, which is notable considering Rinke, Craig, and Soldano are all in favor of dangerous restrictions to abortion. In September, Dixon offered her full-throated, unequivocal support for a 1931 Michigan law still on the books that criminalizes abortion and makes felons out of reproductive health care providers. It’s far more restrictive than the disastrous six-week ban that the Supreme Court allowed to go into effect in Texas last year.
Full exchange below:
Kyle Melinn (MIRS): So the Supreme Court is looking at possibly overturning the Roe v. Wade decision and shifting the authority of abortions back to the states. In the state of Michigan, that would mean a 1931 law that bans abortion in Michigan, is that something you’re in support of?
Tudor Dixon: I am a pro-life candidate no exceptions.
Melinn: OK so the ‘31 law is fine with you?
Dixon: Pro-life no exceptions.
Melinn: No exceptions for rape and incest, or what about health of the mother?
Dixon: No exceptions.
MDP spokesperson Rodericka Applewhaite issued the following statement:
“Michiganders need to know how Tudor Dixon’s extreme abortion agenda will dismantle reproductive health care for Michigan families and women. Dixon is a radical anti-choice zealot committed to enforcing an archaic and dangerous 1931 abortion ban, with no regard to the impacts for incest and rape victims, or those whose life and health is in put in danger. In contrast, Governor Whitmer has fought to protect reproductive rights and called on the legislature to repeal this law that bans abortion in all cases and criminalizes doctors.”
