This Saturday, January 22, marks the 49th anniversary of the landmark Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision that assured the right to choose for tens of millions of women across the country. As the Supreme Court looks poised to dismantle Roe v. Wade, governors will be the last line of defense against dangerous abortion bans for the first time in nearly 50 years.
This week, MDP will be highlighting what Michiganders would face under the extreme GOP candidates running for governor.
GOP insiders’ chosen candidate James Craig has already pledged to force a draconian agenda on Michigan women and families:
- Back in September, Detroit Metro Times reported that Craig would ensure that a severely restrictive Michigan law from 1931, that criminalizes abortion and makes reproductive health care providers felons, stays in place — by whatever means necessary. That would leave Michigan with the most restrictive abortion law in the country, and Michiganders would be affected more than residents of most other states.
- When asked to comment on this revelation, Craig’s campaign doubled-down on his support for the law, stating that he “is unapologetically pro-life and opposes liberal efforts for abortion on demand, late term abortions, and partial birth abortions.”
MDP spokesperson Rodericka Applewhaite issued the following statement:
“James Craig’s full-throated endorsement of criminalizing abortion is a dangerous for millions of Michiganders who will lose the right to choose and access to safe reproductive health care. Michigan families deserve a leader who will stand up for them – that’s why Governor Whitmer has fought to protect reproductive rights and called on the legislature to repeal the law that bans abortion in all cases and criminalizes doctors.”
