LANSING — Today, analysts in Michigan and across the country are pointing to Democrat Chedrick Greene’s massive over-performance in last night’s state senate special election as a “bellwether” for November’s midterm elections, providing a “direct sign of momentum” for Michigan Democrats and setting off “warning signs for Michigan Republicans.”
In response, Michigan Democratic Party Chair Curtis Hertel released the following statement:
“Yesterday’s election in a key bellwether district was a choice between Republicans driving up costs and instilling chaos, or continuing Democrats’ focus on lowering costs and making life easier for working families. The choice was clear and voters elected Chedrick Greene to deliver for Mid-Michigan. This district is quite reflective of our state—and the results are a sign that Michiganders are rejecting Republicans’ toxic agenda of spiking costs, ripping away health care, and hurting workers.
“As we look ahead to November, Democrats are committed to making life more affordable for Michiganders and we are confident that our Democratic candidates up and down the ballot will earn the trust of voters across the state.”
Michigan Republicans are in trouble as voters overwhelmingly reject their toxic agenda for spiking costs, ripping away health care, and hurting workers:
- Chedrick Greene’s victory over Jason Tunney represented a “19- to 18-point swing” towards Democrats compared to 2024—in “a race Republicans were confident they could win in 2025.”
- As Trump and Republicans’ toxic agenda have led to “high fuel prices due to the ongoing U.S. war in Iran, as well as continued economic inflation,” voters resoundingly elected Greene who ran on “promising to lower the cost of living” and “increasing support to expand manufacturing jobs.”
