LANSING — Yesterday morning, MDP Chair Lavora Barnes shed light on MIGOP co-chair Meshawn Maddock’s call for Michigan to secede from the country and urged “any Republicans brave enough” to step forward and condemn Maddock’s unhinged comments.
However, Republicans statewide have still remained silent while Secessionist Maddock garnered national attention. In a new report from The Hill, the national publication conceded that it “wasn’t exactly clear how secession was connected to Maddock’s ire aimed at [Governor] Gretchen Whitmer.” They also detailed that they had reached out to Maddock for comment, but as of the timing of this release she has yet to respond.
“Given that Ron Weiser’s extremist rhetoric on witches and assassinations went unchecked earlier this year, we don’t expect MIGOP co-chair Meshawn Maddock or anyone else in Michigan Republican leadership to distance themselves from these secessionist comments anytime soon,” said Rodericka Applewhaite, MDP spokesperson. “While the MIGOP embraces increasingly unhinged ideas, Governor Whitmer is navigating Michiganders out of this pandemic. Nearly 8 million COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered statewide, helping Michigan speed through Whitmer’s Vacc to Normal program to erase social distancing and mask restrictions and rebuild our economy.”

It wasn’t exactly clear how secession was connected to Maddock’s ire aimed at Gretchen Whitmer, Michigan’s Democratic governor, as Whitmer was elected in a statewide election. […]
Whitmer herself was the target of a kidnap and assassination plot foiled by the FBI last year, which the agency detailed in early October. The plot was orchestrated by a group of militia members apparently dissatisfied with the state’s COVID-19 restrictions.
“Michigan Republicans will call for anything and be seen with anyone — with no regard to the fringe rhetoric it emboldens and violence it encourages — as long as the end goal is undermining Governor Whitmer,” said Lavora Barnes, chairwoman of the Michigan Democratic Party.
“At this point, the question isn’t whether the MIGOP embraces extremism, it’s how many amongst their ranks are in line with these unhinged sentiments. Michiganders deserve to know if there are any Republicans brave enough to call Maddock’s latest antics out or if MIGOP has completely given itself over to hyperpartisanship at all costs,” Barnes continued.
