Michigan’s unemployment rate remains double what it was in March as the economic crisis created by Trump’s failed COVID response continues.
The elevated unemployment comes as Trump fails to have a serious plan to address this pandemic. He continues to refuse to negotiate over the CARES Act, a critical stimulus bill to continue supplemental unemployment benefits and deliver aid to state and local governments. Instead, the flailing president has chosen to unilaterally gut funding for Social Security and Medicare in a desperate messaging gimmick.
“Donald Trump allowed a global pandemic to spiral out of control, and now Michigan families are feeling the devastating economic consequences of his failures,” said Michigan Democratic Party spokesman Christian Slater. “It didn’t have to be this bad, but our president denied science and refused to take action as COVID-19 spread throughout our state. Now, as we are experiencing an economic crisis, he is again failing to take action while working families suffer.”
