Michigan Unemployment Rate Worse than Peak of Great Recession

According to new BLS numbers, the Michigan unemployment rate continues to top the peak of the Great Recession as Trump’s failed COVID-19 response decimates the state’s economy.

The numbers come as COVID-19 continues to spread and Trump and Congressional Republicans refuse to extend supplemental unemployment benefits. The unemployment benefits expire at the end of the month and could strip hundreds of thousands of unemployed Michiganders from critical benefits just as an estimated 75,000 eviction cases begin in the state.

“As Michigan continues to suffer from historic joblessness and an economy devastated by Donald Trump’s failed COVID-19 response, Trump refuses to take action to help unemployed workers,” said Michigan Democratic Party spokesman Christian Slater. “Trump has shown nothing but callous disregard for the Michigan families suffering from his repeated failures.”
