James should follow his own “rules of engagement” and denounce false attacks
Today, the Detroit Free Press/PolitiFact rated “false” baseless smears against U.S. Senator Gary Peters made by failed politician John James’ Washington allies. Yet despite claiming to make honesty a key pillar of his campaign, James has stood by Mitch McConnell and Washington Republicans as they lie about Peters’ strong record of fighting for Michigan veterans.
“John James should follow his own ‘rules of engagement’ and tell the truth,” said Michigan Democratic Party spokesperson Elena Kuhn. “If James truly believes in running a principled campaign he should call on his Washington Republican allies to denounce these false attacks that shamefully misrepresent the record of a fellow veteran.”

Detroit Free Press: National GOP committee distorts Gary Peters’ record on veterans issues
- The attacks are misleading. The NRSC’s claims distort or ignore votes Peters has cast as a member of Congress and his own efforts to introduce and sponsor legislation to support veterans.
- The NRSC claims that “Peters fought against funding for the VA, veterans housing programs, military pay raises, and health care and research for veterans and their families. He also fought against funding for processing veterans’ disability claims.” Peters’ record reveals otherwise.
- The NRSC’s statements rest on a handful of votes that don’t reflect Peters’ actual positions on the issues. Peters has supported the final passage of every bill funding the VA and its housing, health care, and disability compensation programs with the exception of two votes.
- Peters has also voted for every Defense Authorization Act that included a military pay raise with one exception because he was opposed to the direction of the war in Afghanistan.
- Overall, the claims are not accurate. We rate its claims False.
