LANSING– The Michigan Democratic Party released the following statement on behalf of Chair Lavora Barnes on the Supreme Court’s ruling in R.G. & G.R. Harris Funeral Homes Inc. v. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission protecting LGBTQ+ Americans from employment discrimination:
“This is a historic moment in the fight for liberty, justice, and equality for all. No American should live in fear of being fired for their gender identity or whom they love. The fight for full equality is far from over, but today the Supreme Court took our country one step closer.
“While today we made monumental progress, Donald Trump and his administration did everything in their power to fight this achievement and still continue their work to roll back protections for the LGBTQ+ community. Trump’s Department of Justice fought this ruling and Brett Kavanaugh voted against these critical protections. And just three days ago, Donald Trump stripped protections against discrimination for transgender Americans. We need a president like Joe Biden who will take bold stands in favor of full LGBTQ+ equality, not one who fights progress every step of the way.”
