LANSING– Despite being a COVID-19 hotspot and having one of the highest death tolls in the nation, Michigan ranks only 27th in the nation in tests conducted per capita.
The low rate of testing comes after Trump wasted months playing political games and ignoring repeated warnings about the impending pandemic. Now, after failing to ramp up production of critical testing in the months leading up to the crisis, Trump has announced the federal government will end support for COVID testing sites.
In stark contrast to Trump, Governor Whitmer announced yesterday a significant increase in testing sites in Michigan. There will be 13 new or expanded sites across the state including sites in Flint and Detroit that will aim to serve 250 and 750 people per day.
“Donald Trump’s erratic and inadequate response to the COVID-19 pandemic has left Michigan flying blind without the testing needed to combat the virus,” said Michigan Democratic Party spokesman Christian Slater. “While Governor Whitmer leads our state and fights to get Michiganders the testing they need, Trump has been caught unprepared after spending months playing political games and ignoring repeated warnings about this impending crisis.”
