Calls on Michigan Republican Party to support the declaration.
LANSING– The Michigan Democratic Party released the following statement on behalf of Chair Lavora Barnes in support of Governor Whitmer’s request to declare a major disaster in Michigan.
“Today I stand with Governor Whitmer in calling on the federal government to declare a major disaster in Michigan in reference to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“If granted, the major disaster declaration would, among other things, aid Michiganders through mental health support, financial assistance, and legal services, in addition to opening the doors for Michigan, if needed, to be able to rapidly set up field hospitals and other facilities.
“The support that would be granted through the declaration of a major disaster in Michigan is desperately needed to take care of all Michiganders.
“I urge Chair Laura Cox and the Michigan Republican Party to set politics aside and join us in our support of the major disaster declaration. Now more than ever, it is important that we come together, follow the “stay home, stay safe, save lives” orders from Governor Whitmer, and collectively call on President Trump to declare a major disaster in Michigan.”
