LANSING–– Two days after Donald Trump desperately fought to distract from his broken promises at his Battle Creek rally, U.S. Steel announced it will be idling Michigan’s Great Lakes Works mill and laying off over 1,500 Michigan workers.
The news comes only a week after Donald Trump was dealt an embarrassing defeat by China after announcing major concessions in his “phase one” trade deal. And while Trump promised Michigan voters, “if I’m elected, you won’t lose one plant,” the mill is the latest in a long line of plant and factory shutdowns throughout Michigan that has led to a decline in manufacturing in the state.
“Donald Trump lost his erratic trade war, got rolled by the Chinese, and failed to stand up for Michigan steel workers, and these are the consequences,” said Michigan Democratic Party spokesman Christian Slater. “This is yet another devastating broken promise from a president who time and again has left Michigan’s working families behind.”
