LANSING — This Halloween, gargoyles, goblins, and ghouls will be on the prowl, but perhaps the spookiest monster of all are the promises that have been broken by Donald Trump. From health care to the economy to preserving our Great Lakes, Trump has turned his back on Michigan’s working families to push a dangerous agenda that gives even the scariest witch a fright.
Here are three of the scariest broken promises from Donald Trump:
Promise: “We will also work to restore and protect the Great Lakes.” [Trump Campaign Rally, Warren MI, 10/31/16]
Reality: “Funding for the $300 million Great Lakes Restoration Initiative would be cut by $270 million to $30 million under the budget released Monday — the third year in a row the Trump budget team proposed cuts to the program.” [Detroit News, 3/11/19]
Promise: “For Michigan we will bring back your automobile production, and we will bring back your industry. wait til you see what we do for Michigan.” [Trump Campaign Rally, Grand Rapids MI, 11/7/16]
Reality: “General Motors is closing plants in Canada, Ohio, Maryland and Michigan and cutting its workforce by 15 percent as part of a company-wide restructuring announced by the company on Monday. GM plans to halt production at three assembly plants: Lordstown Assembly in Warren, Ohio, Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly and Oshawa Assembly in Ontario, Canada. It also plans to close propulsion plants in White Marsh, Maryland, and Warren, Michigan, in 2019, the company said in a news release.” [CBS News, 11/26/18]
Promise: “We’re going to absolutely terminate and replace Obamacare… It’s going to be terminated and it’s going to be replaced with something that’s going to be terrific and a lot less expensive and much better coverage.” [Trump Campaign Rally, Cadillac MI, 3/4/16]
Reality: “President Donald Trump approved a surprise decision to push for the complete elimination of the Affordable Care Act in the courts. If it succeeded, millions of Americans would lose private insurance or Medicaid coverage and the health care system would be thrown into chaos.” [NBC News, 3/27/19]
“The spookiest ghost isn’t nearly as scary as Donald Trump’s broken promises to Michigan’s working families,” said MDP Chair Lavora Barnes. “There’s nothing more frightening than a president who breaks promise after promise to leave Michigan workers behind while fighting for the rich and big corporations.”
