Michigan Democratic Party Delegate Selection Plan

“It is critical when we choose our party’s presidential nominee that every voice in our Michigan Democratic Party is heard.”

—MDP Chair Lavora Barnes

LANSING—The Michigan Democratic Party announced today that it would begin implementation of its Delegate Selection Plan for the 2020 Democratic National Convention. The MDP, in its continuing commitment to promote diversity, has established an Affirmative Action Committee charged with developing outreach programs to educate, recruit, and train African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, Arab Americans, members of the LGBT community, people with disabilities, young people, and women.

“It is critical when we choose our party’s presidential nominee that every voice in our Michigan Democratic Party is heard,” said MDP Chair Lavora Barnes. “We may not all agree on who should get the nomination, but the delegate selection plan we have put forward ensures that we will all have a say.”

A series of educational workshops have been established to better inform Party members, and the public at large, about the selection process. All workshops are open to the general public and will be held in all fourteen congressional districts across the state. In addition, key MDP caucuses will be sponsoring individual workshops to encourage broader participation among Michigan’s delegation.

A volunteer Speakers Bureau of trained Party leaders will be deployed to local club and county organizations looking to learn more about delegate selection and the role they can play.
