Mike Rogers wants to repeal the Affordable Care Act, slash Social Security and Medicare, siphon money away from public schools, and pass tax giveaways for the ultra-wealthy
LANSING — Throughout his campaign, Mike Rogers has given Michiganders countless reasons not to trust him to represent Michigan in the Senate. With seven days left until Election Day, the Michigan Democratic Party is highlighting how Rogers is only in this race for himself while Michiganders pay the price.
Reason #7: Rogers has enriched himself while supporting policies that would hurt and spike costs for Michiganders:
- Rogers voted against the Affordable Care Act, and he has vowed to repeal the Affordable Care Act. A repeal of the ACA would result in millions of Michiganders being denied health care access and spike costs for families.
- Rogers wants to slash Social Security and transform Medicare into a voucher program, which would rip away Michiganders’ benefits that they worked a lifetime to earn and raise health care costs.
- Rogers supports the DeVos-backed plan to siphon money away from public schools.
- Rogers has attacked workers and “voted consistently against the interests of workers.”
- Rogers voted to slash taxes for billionaires like Betsy DeVos, and he supports passing tax giveaways that slash taxes for the wealthiest few while Michigan families pay the price.
- Rogers backed free trade agreements that hurt Michigan workers, including NAFTA that contributed to Michigan “los[ing] nearly 300,000 manufacturing jobs since 2000.”
Michiganders across the state have “raised concerns” about Mike Rogers “‘enriching himself’ at the expense of Michigan residents:”
- Teamsters Local 406 Recording Secretary and U.S. Army veteran Tom Sidebotham: “It directly speaks to [Rogers’] willingness to answer whatever call has the most dollar signs in it.”
- Veteran and Small Business Owner Jill Hinton Wolfe: “Mike Rogers took the knowledge and connections he gained in Congress and used them to enrich himself, rather than continuing to serve the people of Michigan. Michigan deserves a senator who puts our state’s families, veterans, and workers first—not someone who’s focused on lining their own pockets.”
- United Auto Workers Union Local 602 President Mike Huerta: “We can’t trust Mike Rogers to stand up for us because he’s proven he won’t. So when we look at what he’s done when he was a representative, it’s exactly what he’ll do as a senator—and it’s not something that working families can afford to have on our side.”
- Michigan AFL-CIO President Ron Bieber: “Michigan workers can’t afford to have Mike Rogers in the Senate. With his dismal lifetime pro-worker voting record of just 11% from the national AFL-CIO, it’s clear that Rogers puts Michigan workers last.”
- UA Local 333 Plumbers & Pipefitters Vice President Jeremy Garza: “Mike Rogers has turned his back on Michigan’s skilled trades workforce, prioritizing his personal gain over the livelihoods of thousands of hardworking men and women. He’s sold out our state to enrich himself, leaving the people who built Michigan behind. We need leaders who stand with the workers, not those who profit at their expense.”
- Michigan Laborers District Council Business Manager Geno Alessandrini: “Mike Rogers refuses to stand up for workers, instead he’d rather sell us out to enrich himself. Michigan workers need a champion on our side, but Rogers has made it clear he’s only in this race for himself while Michiganders pay the price.”
- IBEW Local 692 Business Manager and Michigan IBEW State Conference Chair Ryan Charney: “Mike Rogers has shown that he will do anything to enrich himself, even when it hurts working Michiganders. Rogers is not a friend of the working class — he’s only out for himself and his wealthy special interest backers.”
- Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters and Millwrights Political and Legislative Director Eli Isaguirre: “Mike Rogers is more focused on helping China than hardworking Michigan families. We deserve a senator who puts working families first — not someone who’s only focused on enriching himself at the expense of Michiganders.”
- Ann Arbor Senior Ellynn Brouwers: “It’s clear that Republican U.S. Senate candidate Mike Rogers doesn’t care about Michiganders. As a retired health care professional, it’s alarming Rogers wants to slash Social Security. So many Michigan retirees and people with disabilities depend on our benefits that we worked hard for to help with the cost of groceries, utilities, and prescriptions.”
