This week, Michigan Dems honored our state’s proud union history with VP Harris in town and welcomed Gwen Walz and President Biden to the Great Lakes State
LANSING — Michigan continued to see a flurry of presidential campaign activity this week with Vice President Kamala Harris joining Michigan union leaders and members on Labor Day to celebrate the work they’ve done to build our middle class — unions remain the backbone of our country. Michigan had two other major visits, First Lady of Minnesota Gwen Walz, and President Joe Biden. Walz, a former teacher and union member, spoke in Grand Rapids to the Michigan Education Association (MEA) about VP Harris and Governor Walz’s dedication to supporting teachers, students, and our public schools from day one.
Biden followed that up on Friday with remarks about his Investing in America agenda and its significant impact on Michigan’s infrastructure and economy. Under the Biden-Harris administration, hundreds of thousands of new jobs and billions of dollars have come to communities across the state, building a better, fairer economy.
With 59 days until the presidential election, Michigan Dems are laser-focused on turning out voters and delivering Michigan for Vice President Kamala Harris and Governor Tim Walz, and Democrats up and down the ballot.
Check out more highlights from the week below:
First, Michigan Dems across the state celebrated Labor Day and our state’s long history with unions and workers with a special visit from Vice President Kamala Harris:

- “Always good to be in the house of labor,” Harris said at the beginning her brief speech in the high school’s gymnasium. “Always good to be in the house of labor,” Harris said at the beginning her brief speech in the high school’s gymnasium…
- “Everywhere I go I tell people, ‘Look, you may not be a union member. You better thank a union member,’ ” Harris said, prompting cheers. “For the five-day workweek, you better thank a union member. For sick leave, you better thank a union. For paid leave. You better thank a union for vacation time.”
Along with Vice President Harris’s wise words, Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party Lavora Barnes reminded us that, as far as we’ve come, we cannot stop fighting to protect working Michiganders from MAGA attacks:
Then, First Lady of Minnesota Gwen Walz visited Michigan at an event with the Michigan Education Association to highlight the Harris-Walz campaign’s dedication to supporting students, teachers, and our public education system. While Donald Trump and J.D. Vance want to abolish the Department of Education and gut our public schools, Vice President Kamala Harris and former teacher Governor Tim Walz are fierce advocates for public schools across the country:

- “Gwen Walz has been a public servant her entire life, striving to help students grow and learn to become the best version of themselves,” said Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party Lavora Barnes.
After Walz’s campaign stop, President Biden came to Michigan to highlight the successes of his Investing in America agenda and the billions it has infused into Michigan’s roads, clean energy efforts, and jobs. Four years ago, COVID decimated our economy and brought record-high unemployment, but with the Biden-Harris administration, Michigan has bounced back and built an economy that’s stronger than ever. Chair Barnes applauded his visit, saying:
“The past four years under President Biden and Vice President Harris’s leadership have been nothing less than historic, with more than $12 billion poured into manufacturing, infrastructure, and clean energy in Michigan alone. These investments are helping us create more good-paying jobs and a prosperous economy for the future so that Michigan will thrive for generations to come.
“We are thrilled to have President Biden here in Michigan today highlighting the many ways that the Biden-Harris administration has dramatically changed the future of our state. As president, Trump did nothing but make empty promises on jobs and infrastructure, while President Biden and Vice President Harris rolled up their sleeves and got it done.”

Thanks for reading, and we’ll see you next week for the first presidential debate between Harris and Trump. Til then.
