Michigan Democratic Party Targets MAGA Matt Hall, State House GOP with New Five-Figure Domestic Violence Gun Safety Accountability Ad Campaign

The digital ad campaign is targeting priority 2024 red-to-blue legislative seats

LANSING — Today, on the heels of National Gun Violence Awareness Day, the Michigan Democratic Party launched a five-figure two-week digital ad campaign calling out GOP leader state Rep. MAGA Matt Hall and other Republican legislators in the Michigan House who voted against common-sense gun safety legislation overwhelmingly supported by their constituents to keep guns out of the hands of domestic abusers and keep their communities safe.

The new campaign directly targets MAGA Matt Hall and five other state Representatives – Donni Steele (HD-54), Jamie Thompson (HD-28), James DeSana (HD-29), Nancy DeBoer (HD-86), and Kathy Schmaltz (HD-46) – all in vulnerable districts that are 2024 priority seats to turn from Red to Blue. Through a combination of video and static digital ads running on Facebook and other social media platforms, the campaign is calling out these representatives for opposing common sense gun safety measures, like universal background checks and extreme risk protection orders.

“We will not let these Republican legislators hide from the fact that they chose to vote against keeping our communities safe to side with the NRA,” said Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party Lavora Barnes upon the release of the digital ads. “With this campaign, Michiganders will continue to see just how extreme MAGA Matt Hall and members of his caucus are. Simply put, these representatives voted against keeping guns out of the hands of domestic abusers to please the NRA. We must do everything in our power to hold these legislators accountable for turning their backs on protecting their constituents.”

It cannot be forgotten that 1 in 3 women have experienced domestic violence, with 56% of women killed by their partner having been murdered with a gun. In Michigan, we see one of our own die every four days due to a domestic violence incident. We need our lawmakers to stop siding with the gun industry and put Michiganders first.

All six Representatives are part of a digital campaign, which includes the launch of a new website where the ads can be seen, that began today and will reach 130,000 voters across 6 districts, delivering over half a million impressions.

NARRATOR: “Michiganders demanded action, and Democrats in the legislature met the moment. While Governor Whitmer signed new laws to keep guns out of the hands of domestic abusers, some Lansing politicians opposed this vital legislation. Call your representative and ask why they voted against keeping our communities safe.”
