ICYMI: Michigan Dems Highlight MAGA Threat to LGBTQ+ Freedom

AG Nessel, state legislative leaders, and HRC State Director highlight what’s at stake for LGBTQ+ Michiganders this November

LANSING — In case you missed it yesterday, Michigan Democrats held a press conference with Attorney General Dana Nessel, the Michigan House LGBTQ+ caucus, and the Michigan State Director at the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) in Lansing to outline the many threats to LGBTQ+ Michiganders and their families should Trump or the MAGA MIGOP win this November.

We know that Donald Trump has pushed hateful anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric again and again while he and his MAGA Republican allies attacked, demonized, and villainized LGBTQ+ Americans. Trump has appointed judges who oppose marriage equality, banned transgender people from serving in the military, and ripped away health care for the LGBTQ+ community.

With the majority in the state legislature, Michigan Dems have been able to protect queer Michiganders from their hateful attacks, but all of that is at stake in this election. Thankfully, we have strong Democratic leaders like Attorney General Dana Nessel, Speaker Pro Tempore Laurie Pohutsky, state Representative Jason Morgan, and state Representative Emily Divendorf who have fought tirelessly to push back against the MAGA extremists who threaten our most foundational rights.

Gongwer: Dems Talk LGBTQ Rights, Reelecting Biden

  • At a Wednesday press conference with Nessel, members of the Michigan LGBTQ Caucus and Dakota Torolski, Michigan director for the Human Rights Campaign, Democratic leaders discussed some of the issues LGBTQ Michiganders are facing in the upcoming election.
  • “I remember the incredible relief that I felt in January of 2021 when Joe Biden was sworn into office and swiftly repealed all of those terrible efforts and instead replaced them with policies to protect LGBTQ people in those spaces,” Nessel said.
  • Nessel also said Biden has been a “force for equality” for a long time, pushing former president Barack Obama to work on marriage equality.

MIRS: Nessel Tells LGBTQ, Allies To ‘Wake The Hell Up’ For Biden

  • Nessel called Biden the LGBTQ+ community’s greatest ally, a champion and a protector, saying that the only way to prevent the community from being launched backwards 50 years is to re-elect Biden.
  • Michigan Democratic Party Vice-Chair and Rep. Jason MORGAN (D-Ann Arbor) said holding the Democratic House majority is part of the battle, too, and losing that majority would cause recently enacted policies to be “rolled back by an obstructionist GOP that prioritizes an extremist agenda over the well-being of our communities,” stating that House Republicans have opposed those policies at every turn.
  • Pohutsky said she worries about younger voters not having the context of how bad things were or “how quickly they can get that way again if we don’t make the right choice in November. We have got to re-elect Joe Biden. There is no other option there,” Pohutsky said.”
