LANSING – Following the U.S. Supreme Court hearing a case on women’s right to emergency reproductive health care, Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party Lavora Barnes released the following statement:
“Donald Trump and his MAGA allies are the sole reason the U.S. Supreme Court is hearing a case that could further devastate women’s access to reproductive health care in emergencies. Let me be clear, Trump’s MAGA allies are pushing to prevent doctors from providing lifesaving reproductive health care to patients facing medical emergencies. Because of Donald Trump, women across the country have been forced to wait until they are at the brink of death before receiving the care they need.
“Michiganders know Trump is responsible for the chaos and confusion across this country after the overturning of Roe. Yet Trump and his MAGA cronies are ready to go even further – they have a plan to ban abortion nationwide without the help of Congress, overriding our state constitution and the abortion protections Michiganders overwhelmingly voted for in 2022. President Biden and Vice President Harris are the only candidates in this race who will stop a national abortion ban and protect our reproductive freedom.”
Despite Michigan’s state constitutional amendment protecting reproductive freedom, reproductive health care access in the state would be put at risk if Trump and MAGA Republicans return to the White House.
In recent weeks, Trump has doubled down on taking credit for extreme state abortion bans, bragging that he “broke Roe,” saying he “was proudly the person responsible” for overturning it and it is “working the way it’s supposed to.”
Trump’s MAGA Republican allies have plans to attempt to enforce the 150-year-old Comstock Act in order to ban abortion nationwide without the help of Congress.
