It’s been two weeks since a conservative Supreme Court majority overturned Roe v. Wade—the result of Republicans’ decade-long war on the fundamental right to an abortion. Michigan Republicans are celebrating this as a win, but make no mistake, they aren’t stopping there—overturning Roe was just the beginning.
On a national level, Republican leaders want to take it further calling to ban abortion nationwide and more:
Detroit Free Press: “Michigan GOP lawmakers propose 10-year prison sentence for abortion providers”
CNN: “House Republicans eye 15-week abortion ban after Roe ruling”
The Washington Post: “In the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision overturning Roe v. Wade, former vice president Mike Pence says abortion should be banned nationwide and is planning behind the scenes to focus on the issue in the coming weeks, according to advisers.”
But, Michiganders see right through the scheme and are calling them out for the extreme, out-of-touch agenda:
Michigan Radio: “What’s more, the anti-abortion movement will not be satisfied with this win, observes University of Michigan law professor Leah Litman. “The next time the Republicans win control of the Senate and White House and the House of Representatives a national abortion ban is going to be on the table,” she said in an interview.”
Manistee News Advocate: “”It can’t be overstated: This decision is a direct result of the GOP’s decades-long, radical war on reproductive health care and the right to choose,” she said. “Now, with Roe v. Wade overturned, Republicans in statewide elected positions — like GOP-controlled state legislatures like Michigan’s — are already taking steps to make abortion illegal.””
Holland Sentinel: “‘Right now, the right to abortion care is at risk because of a deliberate, decades-long takeover of the Supreme Court by powerful right-wing extremists,’ they wrote. ‘We’re seeing the culmination of this takeover as the Court just overturned Roe v. Wade, the landmark ruling that made abortion access a constitutional right.’”
